A live vaccine against toxoplasmosis for use in sheep. This product may only be prescribed by your local veterinary practitioner from whom advice must be sought.
Product Information for Vets –
Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite which is the second most common cause of abortion in sheep in Ireland. Surveys have shown that it is widespread on sheep farms. Losses caused by toxoplasmosis include increased barrenness, mummifications, abortions, stillbirths and weakly lambs, depending on the stage of pregnancy at the time of infection. A unique, live vaccine is available against toxoplasmosis. Vaccination of ewes before mating helps protect against the losses caused by the disease. The vaccine may be used at the same time as certain other vaccines against sheep abortion. The vaccine is administered at least 3 weeks ahead of tupping and must be ordered specially in advance as it has a short shelf-life. It is advisable to keep in close contact with your prescribing vet and collect the product as soon as it arrives with them. Use the product on the day of collection from your vet. Always ensure you use the product taking note of the expiry date stated on the vial label. Further information is available by clicking here.
Vaccination with Toxovax is known to protect for at least two lambing seasons. It is likely that within this time natural infection will have boosted the animal’s immunity making further re-vaccination unnecessary. However, this cannot be guaranteed and for complete protection vaccination may be repeated every two years.
Toxoplasma is an environmental contaminant so all flocks can be at risk. Many of the losses probably go undiagnosed unless flocks are blood sampled to determine whether titres against toxoplasma are present. Heavy infections, typically in small groups, can cause infertility in half or more of the ewes. More often it is a grumbling problem affecting a few percent of ewes and the extent varies from year to year. However, even at this level it is usually worth controlling.
